British-made goods have “huge advantage in overseas markets” like China and USA, says King’s Award winner

An innovative British coffee brand which has sold more than 22,000 units globally and exports almost 90% of its products attributes its success to its unwavering commitment to backing British manufacturing.

Cambridge-based 9Barista, which produces a world-first jet-engineered stove-top coffee brewer, is exporting 88% of its products to countries including China and the USA.

The company, which recently received the King’s Award in Innovation 2024 for its patented high-pressure brewing system, considers the Made in Britain trademark a key part of its international appeal.

9Barista is a member of Made in Britain – the globally recognised trademark of British manufacturers which supports its 2100 members with expert guidance. The group works closely with government bodies, trade groups, and industry leaders to champion policies that strengthen domestic manufacturing, create skilled jobs, and drive economic growth. 9Barista proudly displays the Made in Britain trademark on its award-winning stove-top espresso machine, which it believes boosts its recognition.

Hugh Clark, Research and Development Engineer for 9Barista, said:

“Being made in Britain has given us a huge brand advantage in overseas markets. We export almost 90% of our machines to international customers. Customers in China and the USA frequently mention how important it is to them that the 9Barista is produced in the UK.

“When purchasing our products, our customers are investing in a premium stovetop espresso maker that they want to count on for years to come. The Made In Britain mark quickly communicates that we have put care and attention into our supply chain and manufacturing, so your investment in our product will be rewarded.”

“The Made In Britain mark is a great way of communicating to our customers that we’re taking advantage of the manufacturing here in the UK and that our products are better quality as a result. Having an organisation like Made In Britain lend its name and mark to the 9Barista machine is a recognisable seal of approval saying: ‘This is the real deal.’

The Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recently praised the manufacturer for its innovative outlook and growing success in a visit to its Cambridge HQ. Made in Britain CEO, John Pearce, joined the visit, highlighting the value of the Made in Britain mark in an increasingly competitive global market.

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said:

“Pinning the official ‘Made in Britain’ badge to my local MP Daniel Zeichner’s lapel was a proud moment – at the factory of one of our 2,100 British manufacturing businesses, just a short cycle from my home in Cambridge.

“Export growth of British manufacturing looks closer than ever when you see young entrepreneurs making and selling thousands of their precision-engineered machines to markets as far afield as China and the United States.

“At 9Barista, cutting-edge marketing and world-class engineering come together to brew the perfect espresso, and an inspiring vision for the future of UK manufacturing.”

Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Daniel Zeichner, MP, said:

“9Barista has taken two of Britain’s great loves – coffee and engineering – and brewed up something truly special. It’s amazing to see Cambridge talent creating world-class products and taking them global. This is local innovation at its finest, and I’m delighted to celebrate their incredible success.”
