Food service providers playing with too many platforms are lapsing in safety, says mpro5

Companies using multiple point-solutions are confusing staff, leading to food safety failures.

UK food businesses continue to fail food safety inspections due to poor food safety conditions and inadequate reporting of processes. A recent 2024 report identified London as the worst area of the UK for food safety, with an average score of 4.36 over 35,820 establishments, followed by the West Midlands with a score of 4.42. The worst town in the UK is Wigan, with an average score of 3.92 over 440 establishments. This may explain the lengths to which many businesses are going to display incorrect hygiene scores.

According to the leading process management app mpro5, most food service providers are playing with too many solutions for their food safety process, whether a mix of paper and digital solutions or simply hosting many different digital solutions.

Too many point solutions within a food service provider will confuse employees, leading them to make unnecessary mistakes, said Phil Meyers, CEO of mpro5. “Businesses do not need to overcomplicate their food safety processes by having multiple systems for reporting compliance, food temperatures and cleaning checks. It only takes one employee misstep for a food safety incident to occur.”

The UK has suffered extensively from food poisoning and outbreak in 2024, with cases soaring in March following a salmonella infestation. Many also fell ill in December 2023 following a violent E.coli outbreak in Wales linked to Mrs Kirkham’s cheese, leading to a casualty. Food service providers should have a single streamlined process management system to log all food safety processes, including where products were sourced.

“When it comes to food safety, food service providers cannot afford to dip their hands in multiple baskets and must utilise one process management platform for their food safety processes”, added Meyers. “Too many companies are utilising multiple point-solutions for different areas of food safety, complicating processes and leaving staff confused. A singular process management platform allows food service providers to log all food safety activities in one place and identify any lapses in compliance.”

“Facilities management across the food industry has continued to evolve with the digitalisation of food safety reporting underway. However, food service providers must be wary not to adopt more point solutions than necessary. A single measured process management platform reduces lapses in food safety and can provide a clear landscape for staff to navigate when recording food safety activities”, concluded Meyers.”
