Padstow Distilling, the award-winning Cornish distillery that took home three awards at this year’s International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), is introducing refillable options using an innovative pouch as part of a gradual commitment to a programme of ‘reduce and reuse’. As well as a step forward in terms of waste reduction, this initiative offers customers economic savings of £6 per 70cl when choosing from the British brand’s core range of small-batch spirits.
David McWilliam says “I have wanted to improve our environmental interaction for a while. It’s not enough just to enjoy the beauty of the place, we have to look after it too. Running a distillery is all about heating, cooling, glass and water and so adds to our footprint and we are constantly mindful of how we must become lighter on the environment. In keeping with our ethos of celebrating the natural beauty of our region and in step with our core value always to ‘do better’ we need to take positive action to reduce our impact. Our new pouches enable a nationwide refill service which begins that gradual journey to better.
“Whilst we have refilled our glass bottles in our bar and for people visiting in store, we can now offer our customers beyond Cornwall the refill service and encourage more reuse of our distinct glass bottles. The move benefits us all and reduces our impact on the environment and costs that we can pass on to our customers.” McWilliam continues.
“We’re a young Cornish distillery, distilling small batch sizes of just 60 bottles. This enables consistency and quality at every step. By offering a more affordable refillable option, we hope to make it easier for consumers to shop locally, reduce their impact and prioritise provenance, especially as we approach the festive season,” says McWilliam.
Spirits available for refill are Padstow Gin “St George’s Well,” Padstow Rose Gin “Hawker’s Cove,” and the gold-winning Padstow Vodka “Gun Point” launched earlier this year. All the distillery’s spirits are crafted using local ingredients sourced near the distillery in Padstow, with barley farmed and botanicals foraged just a mile away from their premises.
After careful research David and his design team selected these durable PVC pouches which feature Padstow Distilling’s distinctive turquoise band, inspired by the Camel Estuary a theme embraced by founder David McWilliam when launching his inaugural Padstow Gin, “St George’s Well,” in 2020.
“Consumers are increasingly interested in quality and knowing where their ingredients come from. We take pride in producing our own spirit from barley grown right here in Padstow, and we forage for Alexanders, one of the key ingredients in our gin, as well as for sloe berries for our seasonal flavours”.
